Brownie Heart Cupcakes for the first boy I ever kissed

I've decided to jazz up my posts by sharing a little something about myself. I'm sorry to say that you will find just how ordinary -- even dull -- my life is. These brownie cupcakes are dedicated to the first boy I ever called "boyfriend," the first boy I ever shared a real kiss with and the first boy ever to break my heart.

This cupcake recipe I found in Martha Stewart's cupcake book. It calls for 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder, 1 1/2 tsp. coarse salt, 1 cup (2 sticks) of room temp. butter, 12 oz. of unsweetened chocolate coarsely chopped, 3 cups of sugar, 6 large eggs (room temp) and 1 tbsp vanilla extract. (yields 24 cupcakes plus 24 hearts)

I was in the 7th grade and we had a P.E. class together. Every month when we were assigned a spot to do our stretches, I desperately prayed that I would get a spot close to his. Of course with my luck I never did. However, from where I stood, I was able to catch a few glimpses of him while we did our daily warm-ups and that was enough to get me through the day. Then of course in my head I meticulously timed and mapped out routes to my classes to increase my chances of running into him in the hallways.

I didn't have a clue if this guy noticed me. Our exchanges were limited and no one in the world knew that I was pining for him.

He had dark stringy hair that went down to his eyes and was often parted in the middle. He was thin, average height -- think of a typical Asian kid. He occasionally wore glasses. His daily wardrobe consisted of pants that were five times larger than his size and some type of oversized sports jersey. My heart would melt every time I saw him swagger down the hall wearing a football jersey so big that it draped down to his knees. I was nonchalant on the outside, but every ounce of me inside swooned.

To make the cupcakes, spray pans with non-stick spray. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. Heat butter and chocolate in a microwave stirring occasionally, then add sugar. With an electric mixer on med-high, whisk until mixture is smooth. Add eggs one at a time. Add vanilla and beat for 3 more minutes. Reduce speed to low then gradually add two thirds of the flour mixture, beat until combined. Remove from mixture and add rest of the flour by folding it in by hand. Smooth tops after putting mixture into the cupcake molds. Bake cupcakes for 17 min. (rotate halfway through), and bake the square pan for 25 min. Let cool.

One morning, God took pity on me and answered my plea. While we were waiting for the bell to ring, this girl who he is friends with approached me and asked me "What is your opinion of him?" I was so taken aback by that question that I couldn't find the right words to answer. The question was so odd. Then I see from a distance, he is intently watching us talk! Blood suddenly rushed to my head and it's as if I could feel my face turn bright pink. She then said, "Well, he likes you and wants to know if you'll go out with him." At the time "going out" of course meant automatically being boyfriend and girlfriend not actually physically going out on a date. I thought, be cool, don't be a dork and start giggling. I calmly replied, "Umm, sure." She walked back over to him and relayed the message and I saw that he was pleased! I was walking on clouds. The bell rang and we all dismissed for class. I did not see him the rest of the day. He called me later that night.

To make fluffy vanilla frosting, use 3 sticks of butter (room temp), 4 cups of powdered sugar and 1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract. With an electric mixer beat butter until creamy, add sugar half a cup at a time. Then increase speed for 10 seconds to aerate frosting, then return to medium speed. This process should take 5 minutes. Frosting should be pale and fluffy. Add vanilla and some red food dye and beat until frosting is smooth.

To our friends, we made a great looking couple because we both literally dressed alike. I was going through my phase of dressing like a boy. I too wore very baggy pants and my older brother's sports jersey's to school. For some reason the boys I went to junior high with were attracted to girls who wore clothes they could borrow. It must be early indications of narcissism that fully develops when they become full grown men. I can imagine for a junior high boy, it would take up some courage to start hanging out with your girlfriend instead of your buddies during passing periods. We would hold hands and kiss before classes and after school. That was our routine. We did that for two months and it all came to an abrupt end. I hadn't seen him in school for a while, he was indifferent towards me and he was short with me on the phone. So, much like the way our relationship began with a message from his friend, our relationship ended with a message from his friend telling me he wanted to break up. I was shocked and devastated but I don't think I cried. To be honest, I cannot remember the reason he gave for the break up, but I think he transferred schools a couple of months later and I never saw or heard from him again.

Brian, these cupcakes are for you wherever you may be.

Chances are he's probably happily married with kids, but instead I'm going to think he's either miserable and alone or in jail. No. I'm not bitter about a silly junior high romance. Not bitter at all.

Use heart shaped cookie cutters on the sheet of brownies and place on top of the frosted cupcakes.
(I used a mini heart shaped cookie cutter and make sure the brownies are cool before adding the buttercream frosting because it will melt. If  you use semi-sweet chocolates, use less butter and sugar for the frosting as the cupcake will become too sweet.)

I fed my Brady bunch family these cupcakes and they were a hit. Of course my oldest sister teased and asked if I was going to blog about them. I said of course. She's such a hater.

Whoop! There it is (Red Velvet sort-of Whoopie Pies)

My last couple of posts have been less about food and cooking but more about, well, nothing really. I confess that I have been much too lazy to cook. In fact, in the last couple of days I ate cheese and crackers for dinner. I don't mind that at all because cheese (fancy shmancy cheese) and crackers for dinner is such a treat. It's right up there with eating eggs and bacon for dinner. However, in the span of my lazy cooking-free days, I did manage to make some whoopie pies -- sort of. The only reason why I made these strange cake sandwiches is because I bought a whoopie pie mold from Sur La Table. Another confession. Sur La Table is one of the unnecessarily expensive stores I can't resist. The other two are Whole Foods and Anthropologie.

I made red velvet whoopie pies for my co-workers.

The recipe I got from Homes and Gardens

Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 tsp. baking soda, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/2 cup softened butter, 1 cup packed brown (or white) sugar, 1 egg, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, 1/2 cup buttermilk, 1 1oz bottle of red food coloring.

Combine dry ingredients. Mix softened butter and sugar then beat in egg and vanilla. Alternately incorporate dry ingredients and buttermilk. Add food coloring last. The batter is very thick.

It's red, it's velvety...

Bake for 7 - 9 minutes in a 375 degree oven.

And of course, like most things I make, the product never looks exactly like the way I envisioned it in my head. I put way too much batter into the molds. The whoopie pie halves are much too big to put two together, but too small to be called cupcakes.

So, I frosted the tops and I called them "Cupcake Tops." What can I say. I am brilliant.

Frosting/Filling recipe: half 8oz package of cream cheese, 1 7oz jar of marshmallow cream, 1/4 cup of softened butter. Mix together.

I did assemble one whoopie pie, which was very messy to eat.

The Shortlist

I'm afraid I'm becoming one of those people ... those errr... 'old' people who can't drink coffee past 2:00 p.m. I am WIDE AWAKE and I think it has something to do with the grande coffee I had at 6:00 p.m. I'm sure I will atone for my mistake come 7:30 a.m. when I have to get up for church.

Well... since I'm awake and I can't seem to stay away from my laptop....

I've been thinking about my summer reading list. Now that the semester is over and I've passed my stats class (not w/flying colors)... I now can do leisurely reading without feeling guilty for never reading for school.

Here is my list. Some I've started and would like to actually finish and some I've had on my list for a very very long time.

1.) The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Stieg Larsson)- I'm a little more than halfway through. It was tough getting through the first hundred pages because it was so slow.

2.) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Hunter S. Thompson) - I can't believe I haven't read this book or come across this book during all my years of study as a journalism student. I'm disappointed my professors did not make us read this book. I finally bought a copy today.

3.) Let the Great World Spin (Colin McCann) - A newer book I heard good things about.

4.) A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Betty Smith) - A classic that I have always wanted to read. I'm going to do my best to read it this summer.

5.) Cat's Cradle (Kurt Vonnegut) - I read about one chapter and it's strange, but brilliantly funny. I often find that people who like Vonnegut are HUGE fans of Vonnegut.

It's a short list. I'm open to suggestions and will hopefully add more.

It's a Mad Mad World

This is a post about five women and their obsession with one TV show. One Saturday in May, five women donned in pearls, full-skirted dresses, one crazy headband and candy cigarette in hand crowded the kitchen preparing a meal worthy of a Draper dinner party.

The TV show is called "Mad Men" and depicts the life of Don Draper, a big shot advertising executive in the 1960s (right before America's involvement in the Vietnam war). During that time, if you worked in advertising, you worked on Madison Avenue. The ad men, called themselves "Mad Men." Draper is a complex man. He is a family man (with a wife named Betty and three kids), and he is one of the most professionally ethical workers at his company, Sterling Cooper (next to Peggy of course). Outside of the workplace, Draper is a different man. He engages in several extra-marital affairs with absolutely no remorse and no sign of stopping. Yet, we still like him for some reason. We want to be with him, work for him even be his friend.

That is why I love this show so much. It is character driven and each character is interesting in his or her own way and they are subtly unpredictable. Also, my life is about communication (my work and my studies) and advertising is all about words and communication. I find it fascinating how they come up with slogans and ads on the show for products that are household items today. With so much reality TV on the air, a show that is brilliantly written and a talented cast dressed in striking wardrobe, Mad Men is one hour of TV paradise -- if paradise consisted of debauchery, cigarettes, corporate climbing and a crazy housewife or two.

Me and four other fabulous women who love Mad Men as much as I do decided to throw ourselves a little dinner party, Mad Men style.

THE CHARACTERS

During this dinner party, we called our wonderful host, Sarah, "Joan" because they both are red heads. Joan is the sexy Office Manager at Sterling Cooper.

JOAN

We called Bethany "Betty" but she is nothing like Betty on the show. Betty, Don Draper's wife is a bit crazy. She once started shooting her neighbor's canaries with her shot gun while wearing her nighties.

BETTY

Naturally, we called Molly "Peggy" because Molly's real name is Margaret (and Peggy is the nickname for Margaret). Molly, however, is not quite like the Peggy on the TV show. Peggy on the show seems like a very shy, very conservative straight laced girl. Molly, seems like the opposite. Peggy, however, turns out to be super slutty on the show, and Molly is not. Later that night Molly switched to being "Twin #2," the model who gave Roger Sterling a heart attack while they were umm.. having relations. Way to go, Twin #2.

PEGGY/TWIN #2

Jaime called herself "Josie." Josie isn't an actual character on the show, but I like to think of Jaime as the secretary who was driving around a John Deere tractor in the Sterling Cooper office and runs over their new boss' foot. Blood everywhere! That episode was awesome.

JOSIE

I was called "Trudy", after Pete Campbell's wife. Pete Campbell is like a little annoying rat at Sterling Cooper. His wife is a bit whiny. Come to think of it, her character is not likable, so later that night, I switched to being "Rachel Menken." She was one of Don's mistresses. I liked her. She was smart, successful and went toe to toe with men in the board room.

TRUDY/JOAN MENKEN

THE MENU

Salad with jello (or California Health Salad). This was not exactly on Mad Men, but all the recipes from the 60s had jello in them.

Ingredients: Fresh fruit, crisp lettuce, cottage cheese and jello. Made by Peggy (Molly).
Surprisingly not bad, except for the lettuce part.

Spam and Bacon-wrapped sausage. Both were really good -- yes even the Spam. Made by Joan (Sarah D.)

Waldorf Salad. In reference to the episode where Don Draper has a meeting with Conrad Hilton, owner of the Waldorf Astoria hotel. Back then, Hilton was known for being a hotel magnate, today, Hilton is synonymous with sex tapes (like One Night in Paris). Anywho... Conrad Hilton offered Don a salad and said it was named after the hotel.

I brought this and I got it from Safeway. There was no chicken in it, just apples.

Old Cookies, Meatballs and Heineken. The cookies Josie (Jaime) bought from World Market and the literally look like they were made in the 60s and had been sitting in some old lady's basement. They did not taste good. The Heineken, I brought and is in reference to when Betty served Heineken at a dinner party for Don's boss, Roger. Earlier that day, Don and Roger had been contemplating an ad campaign for Heineken and suggested that it be marketed to housewives. Coincidentally, Betty serves the Heineken, Don and Roger get a chuckle and Betty gets super pissed at Don after. She told him that she was embarrassed. I told you Betty was crazy. She's beautiful, but crazy. The meatballs, brought by Betty (Bethany) are in reference to when Betty asks Don if he'd like meatballs for dinner, warm or cold.

Bloody Mary. I personally don't like Bloody Mary's because I don't like tomato juice. The Bloody Mary is an ode to Sally (Don and Betty's 8 year old daughter) who apparently on the show knows how to make a mean Bloody Mary -- a skill she uses during dinner parties.

Cocktails that were from the 60s. Betty (Bethany) got this page from Bon-a-Petit magazine which tells you how to throw a Mad Men party! I can't remember what I had. I didn't make them, I just consumed them.

We also had other food like chips, dip and a custard dessert made by Betty (Bethany) using old chocolate from Peggy's (Molly's) fridge. We capped off the night watching Breakfast at Tiffany's. We didn't actually have any Mad Men dvds with us but you can't go wrong with Audrey Hepburn.

P.S. We also had a great 60s soundtrack to dance ourselves silly to. I don't have that playlist. I know for sure that Jimi Hendrix was on it and that's all I remember.

You should check out Mad Men:

"The Cure" for a bad day (pun intended)

When you've been having a bad day -- a bad week, what do you do? What puts you in a better mood? Shopping, chocolate, cookies, libations perhaps? For me, it's a little of all that -- but the perfect combination would be a salty caramel macaron, scoring a cute dress in the clearance rack and just the right playlist to brighten my spirits.

I feel like the last couple of days have been like giant gray cloud. Statistics, among other things has made this week stressful. Unfortunately, my professor is not helpful at all and whenever I ask him a question, he makes me feel like  a 12-year-old who just did something wrong. However, surprisingly, there has been a few bright spots here and there. For instance today when the San Francisco Outside Lands Music Festival released their dates and I found out that the tickets were fairly cheap. Although, the lineup is not out yet, that was still a little bright spot.

Today, I didn't get a macaron, I got a dress I ordered but I don't like it, I drank some home brewed cider and I put together my happy playlist. These are songs that always puts me in a better mood-- whether that's making me want to dance silly, in the rain, in the sun, sing out loud or just simply put a smile on my face. They are in no particular order. Some are old and some less older than others.

1.) Pictures of You - The Cure
My favorite is the one from their live album "The Show." I love the extra long intro.

2.) Just Like Heaven - The Cure
Yes, I am a fan. I would love love love to see them live at least once in my lifetime. I've already missed the two times they were at Coachella.

3.) Redemption Song - Bob Marley
I know, it's kind of a weird choice for a happy song when he has so many peppy songs... but I love the lyrics of this song.

4.) Turn Your Lights Down Low - Bob Marley

5.) Fearless - Taylor Swift
I just can't help myself. I absolutely love her latest album. There is something about her songs that make me happy. I get that feeling similar to when you have a school girl crush. Her songs also make me feel romantic, a little less cynical, basically all the emotions you would see on a chick flick. However, I do think some of her songs perpetuate the myth that the nerdy girl is going to get the hot athlete when we all know that is not what the real world is like -- at least my world and where I went to high school and not with my luck!

6.) Country Road - James Taylor
I guess I could've picked Up on the Roof but On the Country Road is my favorite James Taylor song -- and one of my all-time favorite songs.

7.) Kiss - Prince

8.) Lisztomania - Phoenix

9.) American Girl - Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
"Oh yeah... alright... take it easy baby..." This song is so much fun to sing.

10.) Every Ghetto, Every City - Lauryn Hill
This song is from one of my favorite albums of all time, basically the one album Lauryn Hill had and it was genius. Also, one of my favorite movies growing up and I watched over and over was Sister Act II.

11.) Ants Marching (Live) - Dave Matthews Band
This version is from the Live from Central Park Album. For me, whenever I hear DMB, I think of summer, outdoor concerts and music festivals -- and those things make me happy. DMB is my all time favorite band to see live. I have been to two of their shows, going on my third in August. For me, they are the epitome of live music because they are very skilled (I would even say virtuosos) at their instruments and they always play their songs at least 5 minutes longer than on the record :)

12.) Crush (Live) - Dave Matthews Band

13.) I'll Be There for You - Bon Jovi
Because I love to turn up the volume to this song in the car, and sing it out loud -- very loud.

14.) Hysteric - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

15.) High and Dry - Radiohead
I had to throw this into my happy list because this is one of my favorite Radiohead songs from my favorite Radiohead album The Bends. Radiohead rules.

There you have 15 of them. I can list a lot more but I won't. These are not the conventional "happy songs" but these are some of my all time favorite songs which means when I hear them, I am a happy camper :)

P.S. I'm going back into the kitchen soon. My dad brought me back a cookbook from his visit the Philippines and I am shocked he got the right thing.
