monterey peninsula

My work sent me on a (very long) two days to Monterey and like all work trips, I made the most of it. Monterey is about three hours southwest of Sacramento.

I don't initially look forward to long drives but once I'm on the road I always find a new appreciation for California's expansive and diverse landscape. On my route from Sacramento to Monterey, I passed through Silicon Valley, where I saw a Lexus Google satellite car (presumably one of those self driving ones), the abundant agricultural lands of the Salinas Valley invoking imagery from Steinbeck's East of Eden and finally the Monterey Bay coast, which after three hours of driving felt like a breath of fresh air. I live in the valley where the only body of water I have easy access to is a river so, when I see the ocean, I perk up with excitement. Every. Time.

This is the furthest I've driven my car, unlike my previous car (may it rest in peace) that I only had for 3 years but put tens of thousands of miles going up and down, left and right of California multiple times.

A trip to the Monterey Peninsula is not complete without visiting Carmel-by-the-Sea (the official name) and you cannot resist its charm. I want to be one of the old rich people who live in this beautiful town that’s filled with expensive stores and quaint art galleries. I would have to be old and rich to live here otherwise a fun single woman in her thirties will shrivel up and die of having to go to bed early because everything closes early, the lack of interaction with people under the age of 50 and the lack of seeing men we might be remotely attractive to and having other young people who act like a drunken fool so you don't look so bad—all the essentials of a healthy thirties life.

Downtown Monterey at night.

When I took this shameless “selfie”, some psychological fear briefly reared its ugly head and said to me, “This is how it’s going to be for the rest of your life, traveling alone and you’ll have to take “selfies” to get any photos of yourself on your vacations.” Then I killed that thought--killed it good with booze positive thoughts.

Whenever I visit a city, I always try to eat at a place that is specific to the city. In Monterey, I went to Restaurant 1833, a James Beard award nominee for best new restaurant in 2012. Because I'm a sucker for things that say "nominated for", I had to go. The restaurant is the historic Stokes Adobe and you can dine in various rooms (e.g. the living room, the loft, the library, etc.).

Of course, I had to visit Monterey's only brewery, which was conveniently located at my hotel! (The Portola). Peter B's only serves their beer. I had their IPA and an artichoke grown in the Salinas Valley. I enjoyed the beer, the artichoke not so much. It turns out I only like marinated artichokes.

While we are on the subject of food and beer, I've started another blog focused on beer and food. I came up with this idea last week when I was looking for an old blogpost I wrote about a beer and had to sift through dozens of posts just to find it. The blog, called "The Back Pages Beer and Food Blog" (backpagesbeerandfoodblog.blogspot.com) is to function as a log of all of the beers I drink and restaurants worth noting. I can look back on what I liked and didn't like and because I have delusions of grandeur I believe the public should read about what I think. I will post everything I post there to this current blog but likely in a shorten revised form.

san francisco beer tour

A few weeks ago I visited two breweries and one pub in San Francisco. Brewery tours have become one of my favorite ways to spend the day.

21st Amendment
21st Amendment is a brew-pub located in the South Beach area. I love the names of their beers. They have this watermelon beer that's quite popular with the ladies. Also, as a bonus if you visit this brew-pub, The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen is just right across the street (!) if you aren't into the food at 21st Amendment, but the food at the pub is pretty good.

Toronado Pub
Over in the Haight-Ashbury is Toronado Pub. This place does not serve food, it's small, has a dive vibe but has excellent beer selection with a range from Russian River on tap to Dog Fish Head. The restrooms are covered in graffiti/art? (including the toilet seat). Also at this place you may run into more than one old man with dreadlocks that go to the floor and instead of the stench of cigarettes permeating from the outside, you will smell weed.

Speakeasy Brewery
If you head a little south is Speakeasy Brewery. They only have a tap room which happened to be filled with "Punks" the day we visited. Yes boys and girls, the punk scene is still alive. I stuck out like a sore thumb.

Now officially on the search for an opportunity for another beer tour somewhere!

NorCal Mini Brew Tour

Northern California has some great craft breweries, some of the most popular in the country. Here's three I visited on Saturday... not a bad way to spend a hot day.

Bear Republic Brewing, Healdsburg
The Bear Republic brewpub is located in downtown Healdsburg which is very wine-centric since it is located in the Napa Valley. The place is filled with fancy shops (french bakeries, cheese shops and wine stores galore!!) and boutiques.

If you're ever in Healdsburg, and I highly recommend visiting the city, stop by Bear Republic, have a pint or two if you want a break from the wine.

Russian River Brewing Co., Santa Rosa
Russian River Brewing is about 20 minutes south of Healdsburg. Russian River Brewing is not a very large brewery, compared to some other craft brewers but has won countless awards and they produce one of the most coveted beers in the nation, Pliny the Elder. The brewpub is located in downtown Santa Rosa and it is always packed with beer enthusiasts. The food is also very good.

If you ever visit, grab yourself a growler because their beers are not often available at your local pub.

Lagunitas Brewing Company, Petaluma
Lagunitas is about 20 or 30 minutes south of Santa Rosa and is located in an office park. Lagunitas has a great outdoor patio with a mini amphitheater and another mini stage for live bands. I think this is where all of Petaluma comes to party.

At Lagunitas, I met this lady waiting for her date she met on match.com. She introduced her date as her "match.com" date to my friends and I as if the situation between the two of them was not awkward enough. When he briefly walked away, she told me that Lagunitas was a great place because if your match date doesn't work out you can usually find someone else in the crowd. I wonder how the rest of their date went?

Brew tours are fun as long as you're not the designated driver. Cheers!

On the 11th and 12th Days... 12 Holiday Beers

Both beers from one of my favorite local pubs, Rubicon.

This is one of their special beers called the 1850 London Porter. Perfect for a cold day.

I love this red head. Rubicon's Irish Red which is one of their seasonal beers.

I have to admit for the first time... ever... I am so relieved Christmas is just about over. I enjoy Christmas and the holidays but the holidays are also very very exhausting.

I hosted Christmas in my apartment this year and I almost had a panic attack that all 15 of us weren't going to fit but it all worked out well. I turned my desk into an appetizer table and brought in extra chairs and amazingly we all had a seat.

Merry Christmas! Enjoy this rendition of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas sung by that famous old hippy.

On the 9th and 10th days... 12 Holiday Beers

Life and Limb. So good, so strong. This beer is an east coast-west coast collaboration (kind of like a Biggie and Tupac collabo). Two of the most popular brewers in the country, Dogfish Head (from Maryland) and Sierra Nevada (from California) got together made Life and Limb. This is a good winter beer. It's dark, malty with a sweet finish.

Moylan's Hopsicle
I don't remember what this tasted like. I may have already consumed one too many at this point. This is not a seasonal beer.

It's almost Christmas time and after is when the diet begins. Cheers.

New Year, New Foods to Try #1: Beer Float

Beer Float

That's right. That my friends is a beer float. Allagash Black with a scoop of Gunther's Vanilla Ice Cream to be exact. It was delish, especially when you mix it all together and it turns into a type of beer shake.
